Reporting to the Director, Education Program Services, the Assistant Director, Education Program Services will support and execute the delivery of day-to-day administrative operations of the supports and services provided by the department. Additionally, the Assistant Director is an essential leader who works in collaboration with the Director on implementing independent study programming for tribal youth and ensures the quality of overall educational supports, services, programs, and initiatives are provided in accordance with the Tribe’s 2040 Vison.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

1. Manages and designs current and revised educational programs and initiatives in accordance with San Manuel law and policy.

2. Collaborates with the Director and the San Manuel Language Revitalization Project team to implement language curricula and classes for the Summer Academy, Tutoring Program, and other educational programs and initiatives.

3. Promotes and facilitates opportunities for the San Manuel Tribal community for pursuing academic endeavors, networking, coalition building, mentoring, and cultural identity exploration.

4. Provides academic and personal guidance and advocacy for the San Manuel Tribal community.

5. Oversees educational advising for San Manuel youth and adults to support all life stages of learning.

6. Creates networks and cooperative relations with other Tribal education departments, universities, and colleges that support the execution of the Tribes 2040 Vision.

7. Supports the facilitation of department events.

8. Fosters educational ties with Native American Tribes and organizations in Southern California and nationwide.

9. Perform other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

Supervisory Responsibilities 
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.   Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.

Education/Experience/Qualifications 
Bachelor’s Degree in Content, Education, or a closely related field is required.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a student-facing educational setting is required.
A minimum of three (3) years working in a tribal education setting is preferred.
A minimum of five (5) years of direct supervisory experience is required.
Must be willing and capable to learn the Serrano language.
Demonstrated commitment to students and learning.
Experience with adult learning theories and professional development programming is required.
Demonstrated educational philosophy and methods that encourage the development of active and lifelong learning.
Exceptional understanding of a progressive approach to instruction and academic counseling and a wide knowledge of the most innovative, culturally sustaining, and successful instructional methods is required.
Excellent relationship-building and management skills.
Strong problem-solving and consensus-building abilities.
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to lead a team.
Strong community-building skills.
Demonstrated personal leadership responsibility.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations 
A qualified candidate/employee must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the enterprise’s insurance carrier.
