The Lower Kuskokwim School District is located in Southwestern Alaska and is the largest rural school district in the state in the number of sites, teachers, and students. The District headquarters are in Bethel. The District boundaries are spread over a region the size of West Virginia encompassing the area along the Kuskokwim River and the coastline of southwestern Alaska. Access to village communities throughout the district is by aircraft or boat. LKSD serves approximately 3,769 students in 24 communities, and approximately 83% of the student population is Alaska Native, predominantly Yup’ik and Cup’ik.
