Anpetu Waste! This position supports a vital new pilot program to teach Lakota Language and Culture in an immersion setting to students in the Rapid City Area Schools. The Lakota Language and Culture Immersion program will share space at the Canyon Lake Elementary location and be comprised of students from across the community. The pilot will be staffed and supported by the following full-time positions in Year 1:
* Lakota Immersion Kindergarten Teacher
* Lakota Immersion Language & Culture Teacher
* Lakota Language & Culture Classroom Assistant
The program will also be immediately supported by key members of the RCAS administrative team including a Principal, Title VI Manager, Director of Federal Programs, and Director of Teaching Learning and Innovation. In its first year, the program will focus on a Kindergarten classroom and future years will be aimed at expanding the program to maintain the Kindergarten classroom and expand to continue support for the first cohort of students and they advance to successive grade-levels.
Candidates must be fluent in Lakota Language and deeply, holistically knowledgeable of Lakota culture from a personal, first-hand perspective. The successful candidate must also be (or able to become) certified to teach Kindergarten learning through the SD Department of Education. In alignment with the key goals and requirements of this program, preference in hiring will be granted to Lakota candidates.
