Position Overview

As part of MSU Extension and the Community, Food and Environment Institute (CFEI), this position provides leadership and expertise to enhance food development efforts within Native American communities in the Upper Peninsula and counties in northern Michigan. This position will have statewide responsibilities and will collaborate across work teams, Institutes, and community groups, working with faculty, specialists, and educators for advancement of clientele needs.


In this position, you will identify, design, implement and evaluate educational programs related to the USDA Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program (FRTEP) grant. Through your leadership, you will design, adapt, and provide youth food systems engagement and education experiential trainings, toolkits, and other materials on food production, health foods, health and nutrition, and food system career opportunities. You will also design, adapt, and provide tribal farmer support outreach activities, toolkits and other supportive training to address the needs of tribal farmers.


Through collaboration in research, engagement with community members, and dissemination of research through various methods, including in-person and multimedia programming and written communications, you will implement programs that lead to public knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that focus on healthy food production that highlight Indigenous foods while promoting STEM education. You will seek intergenerational tribal education related to healthy, Indigenous food production and you will also develop, produce, and deliver food system outreach for tribal audiences in cooperation with tribal governmental units with messaging and content that is accessible and inclusive and is consistent with USDA FRTEP grant and the CFEI messaging.


Your work will include close collaboration MSU colleagues, as well as a diverse network of partner groups, including Bay Mills Indian Community, Hannahville Indian Community, Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, and the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians.


Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the Bay Mills Community College Land Grant Offices.

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, local foods, youth STEM education, or related field, with an expectation to complete a Master’s degree within a specified time frame; or Master’s degree in agriculture, local foods, youth STEM education, or related field.
